Jamie Alexander Y-2581 had to talk his youngest daughter Carly, out of sailing at the 2009 Y-Flyer Labour Day Classic in Norway Bay, Quebec. She was very determined and upset at not being able to crew. She is only 4 years old! Look out everyone, she will be skippering soon and she is a one tough lady.

Kate Somek was married to Ben Whetsell on October 10, 2009 in Mount Olive, North Carolina. It was a great wedding! The couple now resides outside of Goldsboro, NC. Sooner than later she’ll get Ben in a Y-Flyer.

Ed Hone, Richard King and Kelly Lyon are currently working on the Canadian trophy protection project discussed at the Annual General Meeting in Ottawa, Ontario on August 15th. The CYFYRA will advise details as they become available.

Chris Locke from Ottawa, Ontario has recently purchased Y-1056 and newer sails for her. Welcome to the CYFYRA.

Much to the CYFYRA’s surprise, no one won the CFL Football pool for this year’s Grey Cup. I cannot believe some took the Argos and no Buffalo is NOT in the CFL…….jeepers!



September / October 2009

Parker Cudney and Michelle Hicks Y-1059 won the Canadian Junior Nationals in Sudbury, Ontario Fleet #17 on August 22.

Harold Gillmeister, Member for Life, turned 97 on September 29th. Harold has over the years served as CYFYRA President, Vice President of Measurements and Restrictions, Secretary and IYFYRU Chairman. Happy Birthday!!!!

The most recent active member joining the CYFYRA for 2009 was Jos Woods from the Gatineau River Yacht Club Fleet #21. Jos also sent in his 2010 membership as well. Thank you for your continued support.

From the archives; Alvin M. Youngquist, the creator of the Y-Flyer, passed away on July 28, 1979 (30 years ago) at the age of 87 in Whitehall, Michigan near White Lake. As his son, Alvin Jr. noted; “He sailed a good race.”

Betsy Stewart and Gene Leier have spent the last four years restoring Y-1213 found in Minneapolis, Mn and sailed her maiden voyage at the Hudson Yacht Club’s 100th anniversary on July 12. She is called “Scrimshaw” meaning it’s a work of art done by a sailor.

Jamie and Jack Alexander Y-2581 won the Y Labour Day Classic regatta in Norway Bay, Quebec on September 6, hosted by Fleet #22.

In a totally Canadian event, a beaver has been reported to have chewed the transom off a wooden Y-Flyer at West Hawk Lake, Manitoba near the North Western Ontario border. The boat has been repaired. The beaver remains at large at last report.

Warren and Alexander Flannery Y-2669 captured the SYC regatta in Sudbury, Ontario September 5 - 6, Fleet #17.

Richard and Colin King Y-2794 won the Pumpkin Regatta in London, Ontario October 3 - 4, hosted by Fleet #3.

Y-Flyer activity is stirring at West Hawk Lake, Manitoba thanks to Paul Krestanowich and Tom Sanders for their assistance in locating these Y-Flyers. With Falcon Lake, Fleet #23 nearby 2010 could be a tremendous year for sailing.

July / August 2009

Please note our new Canadian Y-Flyer website address will now be www.y-flyer.ca. It was recommended at the AGM August 15 the site should be an easier recognizable name rather than going by our organization’s initials.

Bob Somek and Caroline Bilodeau Y-2758 won the Lac St. Joseph Invitation on July 11 -12 at Lac St. Joseph, Quebec.

Falcon Lake, Manitoba is the newest CYFYRA Fleet #23. Fleet status was requested and granted at the AGM in Ottawa, Ontario August 15, 2009. Currently three Y-Flyers reside at the Falcon Lake Yacht Club. This includes Jamie Richardson Y-992, Graeme Coopland Y-903 and Gerry Kondi Y-982.

Rob Montgomery and Mike Lamoureux Y-2710 won the North Shore Regatta on July 18 -19 in Sudbury, Ontario.

Alain Prevost (originally from Saguenay, Quebec area) has started building his Y-Flyer in France. He figures that it will take approximately six months to complete due to his work schedule. The CYFYRA will keep everyone one up to date on his progress.

Y-2700 their second boat was sold to Pierre Dignard and remains in Sudbury, Ontario.

Gordon Seiter has started an “Okanagan Reclamation Project” with finding a fiberglass Booth (Boson) Y-Flyer in a farmer’s field. Gordon is in Summerland, B.C. Welcome to the CYFYRA.

Charles Hartlieb and Parker Cudney Y-2394 won the North Shore regatta held in Sudbury, Ontario on July 19-20.

Brent Davies Y-2053 from Edmonton, AB has joined the CYFYRA for 2008 as an active member. For good measure he has already sent in his 2009 membership fees as well. Thank you for your support.

Chris Hey and Stephanie Andrieux Y-2648 captured the Canadian Junior National Championship held in Sudbury, Ontario on August 1-2.

The AYFYRA launched their modified version of the yflyer.org website. Unfortunately it took a couple of months for the CYFYRA link to be fixed.

Pierre Dignard and Parker Cudney Y-2776 won the SYC regatta held on September 6-7 at Sudbury, Ontario.

Randy Gast crew on Y-2546 volunteered to develop a separate website for the CYFYRA. It was launched on September 10. Please search for the new website at CYFYRA.com and assist Randy on developing this separate website for the Canadian Y-Flyer Association. Thank you for your assistance.

Pierre Dignard and Parker Cudney Y-2776 won a very close exciting Ontario Provincial Championship held in London, Ontario on October 4-5.

Keith Watson has sold Y-2700 to the Andrieux family Y-2648 of the SYC. They were finding it difficult to fit four family members into one boat who all wanted to race.

Wes Willoughby Y-633 is remaining in San Diego this summer rather than at Stoney Lake near Peterborough, Ontario. Y-633 is up for sale, completely refurbished and complete with the West system. You can contact him at (858) 272-5407.

Pierre Dignard and Parker Cudney Y-2776 won the Inco Regatta June 21-22 at Sudbury, Ontario.

Chuck Hartleib and Parker Cudney Y-2776 won the North Shore Regatta July 19-20 at Sudbury, Ontario

Allan Hilborn from Cambridge, Ontario has purchased Y-2698. Allan has also purchased Y-616 and is currently restoring her as well. He will be sailing at Belwood Lake Fleet #19.

Warren Flannery formerly Y-2648 is returning from assignment in Indonesia to rejoin Fleet #17 in Sudbury and the CYFYRA. Welcome back to Canada!

Be advised that North Sail tuning guides for the Y-Flyer are available on the Y-Flyer website, yflyer.org, under equipment. If you cannot find it, then please contact Bob Somek (705) 671-2127 and a copy will be sent to you. It is just another part of the service the CYFYRA provides for its members. Thank you.

Kevin (Marv) Rheault from Ottawa, with the assistance of Jamie Alexander, has recently purchased Y-2667 from the Atlanta, GA area. Norway Bay Fleet #22 has just added another to her growing numbers.

Stephen Wolfe Y-1048 of the GRYC, Gatineau, Quebec has joined the CYFYRA as an active member for 2008.

The Sudbury Yacht Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will be building a new deck attached to the club house facing east down the Ramsey Lake. This will be completed before the end of June this year.

Peter Swail from Ottawa has recently purchased Y-600 and will be adding her to Norway Bay’s Fleet #22.

Harold Gilmeister, Member for Life, from Hudson, Quebec is cruising along quite nicely at the young age of 95. In a recent conversation with him he wishes everyone good racing for 2008!

TJ Woodbeck, a junior sailor near Crysler, Ontario has purchased Y-1492 and a set of plans to restore her deck. For those who may remember, this was Mike O'Sulivan's boat from Ottawa, Ontario when he won the Internationals in 1973. Welcome TJ to the CYFYRA.

Peter and Shelia Whiting on Amherst Island near Kingston, Ontario have recently purchased Y-1433. Both Peter and Shelia have been busy refurbishing the boat since September. Welcome to the CYFYRA..

Marc Ranger Y-99 in Wakefield, Quebec has recently purchased Y-1730 from Bob Somek and will give her a complete make over. After seeing the craftsmanship that Marc performed on ol' 99, I can hardly wait to see what she will look like.

Alan Prevost, our Canadian in France, that recently purchased plans to build the first Y-Flyer in Europe, has already been busy making preparations to start construction. The CYFYRA will keep everyone posted on this historic venture.

Dinner hosted by Jim MacKenzie and Carleen Hone at the Ontario Provincials in London, Ontario on September 29th was both delicious and quite unique. The dinner tables were pontoons from a new Tri-Mar that Jim is building and the place mats were sheets of sandpaper. If you spilled anything you could quickly sand it off. Jim's nephew Paul, fourteen years old, was the chef and this guy has a great future. What a great dinner! Thank you from all who attended.

The CYFYRA has just sold is first set of plans to FRANCE. Alain Prevost a Canadian who has been living in France since 1973 first sailed a Y-Flyer in Cam Nominingue, Quebec at age 14 and fell in love with the boat. Now retired he is ready to take on a "Family" project and has purchased a set of plans. This will surely open the eyes of many. Internationals someday might encompass the world.
Slywin Yang, age 12,attended the 2007 Sudbury Yacht Club Sailing School returned with her family to Indianapolis, IL at the end of the summer. The family, are all Canadians with her Dad, Charles, working in Indianapolis proper.To keep Sylwin's interest the CYFYRA put her in touch with Paul White, AYFYRA Secretarywhere she was recruited to sail with him at the Indy Outty Regatta September 8-9, 2007 placing 9th overall. Keep up the good work!

Pierre Dignard and Parker Cudney won the SYC regatta September 8-9, 2007 at the Sudbury Yacht Club. Jamie and Jack Alexander Y-2581 captured the Y Labour Day Classic at Norway Bay, Quebec September 2, 2007. Jack is only 6 years old. Great work kid!

Ed and Marion Tate were honoured on Saturday night August 11, 2007 at the Canadian Nationals for Ed's dedication and service to the CYFYRA for 15 years as President. Marion was honoured for allowing Ed to be President for all that time and sharing her car port with numerous Y-Flyers in various stages of construction. Ed has retired but will still keep an eye on the young ones coming up the ranks.

Pierre Dignard and Parker Cudney Y-2776 sailed to aCanadian National Championship at the Sudbury Yacht Club August 11-12, 2007. Matt Smider and Sylwin Yang Y-2710 captured the Junior Canadian Nationals on August 7, 2007 at the Sudbury Yacht Club. Well done! Steve McCamus and Randy Gast Y-2546 won the National Capitol Regatta in Ottawa, Ontario on July 28-29, 2007. This is Steve and Randy's first regatta win of their careers. Great work!

Bob and Amanda Somek captured a very weird wacko North Shore Regatta at the Sudbury Yacht Club July 21-22, 2007. Kelly Lyon from Osgoode, Ontario has recently purchased Y-2005 and joined the CYFYRA as an active member. Welcome.

Bob Somek and Caroline Bilodeau won their second consecutive Quebec Provincial at the Gatineau River Yacht Club July 14-15, 2007. Joop Langelaar from Salmon Arm, BC has joined the CYFYRA as a newsletter member for 2007.

Rob Paterson Y-967 Norway Bay, Quebec has followed in his father's footsteps joining as an active member for 2007. However, Barb his mother still wants the newsletter sent to her home so she can read it first.

Bruce Samson Y-960/Y-990 near Kenora, Ontario has joined the CYFYRA as a newsletter member. He winters in Arizonia but returns home each summer.

Parker Cudney from the SYC Fleet #17 is the first Junior member for 2007. Parker weighs as much as a seagull but makes up for his weight in desire.

Steve McCamus from Alymer, Quebechas just purchased Y-2546 from Jim MacKenzie. He and Randy Gast his crewwill be cooking now this summer in Norway Bay, Quebec Fleet #22.

Gerald Swartz Y-94 from Clive Alberta has just complete a scale model of Y-94 after fifteen months, scale 1:10. The blocks, centreboard winch, beaver tail rudder are fully functional. It looks pretty cool!

Stephen Wolfe Y-1048 from Chelsea, Quebec has not only rebuilt his Y-Flyer, that looks like a piece of furniture but has now joined as an Active Member in 2007 and is getting ready for the Quebec Provincials, Gatineau, Quebec July 14-15, 2007.

David Danyluk Y-1402 from Calgary, Alberta is the first 2007 Active Member from the west. He sails at his cottage in Saskatchewan.

First Active Member for 2007 is again John Houston from Toronto, Ontario. John is a well know Y-Flyer sailor from the London, Ontario area.

Patrick and Gigi Andrieux have just purchased Y-2648 from Warren Flannery recently transferred to Indonesia and will continue to sail her from the Sudbury Fleet #17.

With deep regret Bob Paterson Y-967 from Ottawa, Ontario passed away on Feb 28, 2006. He summered in Norway Bay, Quebec home of Fleet #22.

Congratulations to Tony and Vicki Passafiume Y-2670 for winning their third straight Internationals at Belwood Lake, Ontario July 12-14, 2006.
